ABOUT jess…

I’ve had a camera in hand for as long as I can remember, always pointing it towards the subject I FInd most captivating at any moment in time: food, friends, travel, nature and in this season of life, family. i love humans and hold a deep reverence for the beautiful chaos of being alive.

When my children were little, I made a promise to myself that I would do a photoshoot with a professional photographer once-a-year or so.  To this day, every time the shoot rolls around I feel trepidation. Usually, because of some hang-up about my appearance mixed with a healthy dose of exhaustion, ‘nothing to wear,’ finances, full calendars, and any other excuse I can throw in for good measure. Every year, I push through, and I’m always so glad I did because, while my phone camera currently holds nearly 80,000 photos, I am in barely any of them.

I treasure the images from these shoots more and more as time goes by. The years really do pass in a flash and I am so glad to have these memories - of our home, our joy, our life, the way my children’s bodies collapse into mine; the way we look at each other, the way we make each other laugh… Photos that hold all the beautiful, messy, fleeting details that would otherwise become distant memories in the blur of life and motherhood.

I am beyond grateful that others trust me to do the same for them. As a postpartum doula and mother of two, I bring a sensitive touch to my photo sessions. I know babies, I know toddlers, I know bigger kids and most importantly, I know mums. I’m also pretty good at making sure dads have a fun time, too.

I spent my 30’s writing and photographing cookbooks , a gift that allowed me to stay home with my children when they were little, and fit my work around motherhood. It was photographing Life After Birth that gave me the nudge I needed to enter the world of family photography and, after wanting to be a photographer for as long as I can remember, I haven’t looked back.
